The History of Coffee

The popularity of coffee in north America did not begin until around the Revolutionary War yet was extremely successful prior to that in Europe, Africa and the Muslim world.

It is believed that coffee began in the 15th century in Ethiopia where the coffee beans were consumed whole and the energizing qualities were discovered.  It was in Arabia where the beans were finally roasted and brewed and that beverage quickly spread to the Middle East.  From there it spread to Europe through the trading ports in Venice and on it’s way across Europe.

Due to the lack of availability of tea from the British, the demand for coffee rose, as did the prices, permanently securing itself as an important commodity of the US.
