Kathi Roll Express

With Mexican Street food being the hot scene in Toronto for the last couple of years it is always nice to find something a bit different. The Kathi Roll Express does just that. Their signature dish, the Kathi Roll can be found all through the streets of India being sold out of food stalls, street vendors and food trucks. Similar to a burrito, Indian flat bread (parantha) is stuffed with BBQ meats, egg, vegetables and cheeses, and rolled perfectly into a handheld sandwich.

With two locations, one downtown and the other uptown in the Lawrence and Avenue area, this tiny little restaurant is for anyone wanted something a little different in their fast food and take-out.

Appetizers such as Chat Papri, Pani Puri, Goat and Peppered Chicken Tikka pack huge punches in both novelty and flavour. Perfectly tender pieces of goat and chicken are boldly spiced while the India version of nacho;s the Chat Puri combine sweet and spicy elements layered on crispy fried bread.  A watery, flavored broth accompanies the Pani Puri that is poured into each delicate shell and consumed in one flavored burst.

The restaurant also offers their take on a Indian hot dog with their Lamb Seekh, tender lamb rolled into a buttery hot dog bun.

Kathi Roll Express

The variety of Kathi Rolls both for carnivores and vegetarians is extensive.  The Shami Kebab is incredibly spicy, while the Paneer Shaslik was a wonderful mixture of creamy cheese and fiery peppers.  The butter chicken version leaned more towards a tomato-y based sauce while I prefer a much more velvety butter I can see it being popular among beginners to the Indian Food Scene.

Of the two franchise only the Avenue Road restaurant offers Curry dishes though they are moving to making both menu universal.  Each curry has its own very distinct flavour combination which makes picking a favorite a bit difficult.  Served with hot, fluffy naan bread I suggest that you order several and share with your friends.

Desserts range from barfi, milk cake and carrot halwa all mildly sweet and creamy. And for those wanting the full street food beverages experience beverages such as the Indian version of sprite and coke are also available.
